Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are created from the Office of Personnel Management, but they’re intentionally broad to allow interpretation by particular agencies. For instance, hiring agencies could use their judgment to determine if candidates have “specific” expertise for a specific job.

These requirements will determine the level of a student’s first class. When you start working at your new job, you begin to accrue specific experience in your work that will assist you in advancing your career. All applicants for grades and positions with experiences and education are encouraged to submit equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Please remember that certain positions are subject to additional requirements, like the speed of typing, health, or the age. These requirements aren’t common and only apply to specific vocations that need a high level of physical fitness.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below provides the work experience necessary for Professional and Scientific Positions in diverse areas. Depending on credentials that are required, these positions are awarded grades ranging from GS-7 up to 13+. Engineering, computer science, biology, chemistry, and many other technical positions are examples of jobs that fall into this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

By qualifications, the Grades for these jobs differ between the GS-1 level to the GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, administration support, and stenographers are all instances of jobs that fall under this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Each December, thousands federal employees are eagerly awaiting the announcement of whether or not they’ll receive a raise for the coming year. But who decides how much increase you’ll be getting? Are you sure that the president whipped the idea up? And what about locality adjustment – who is in charge of making them?

A substantial revision of the General Schedule Pay Scale was brought about by The Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) in 1990, which was passed by Congress. Specifically, the bill attempted to eliminate the increasing wage disparity between federal and private sector posts to prevent highly skilled people from leaving their jobs in the government.

The most significant change was introduction of Locality Adjustments which raise Base Pay by a certain percentage depending on a employee’s location of employment. It is notable that the law connects location adjustment rates to similar private sector earnings, not to the more well-known fluctuations in living costs.

Several restrictions govern the work of government employees and aren’t allowed to do.

Many aspects, like the grading guidelines and policies, are controlled under the supervision of The Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Certain details are codified, whereas OPM sets others up when the need arises. For instance, suppose that the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are severely affected. In this scenario, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) might even decide to set higher base pay rates known as Specialty Pay Rates, for certain grade, levels, locations and occupations.
