Essential Points to Keep in Mind

The guidelines were developed in collaboration with the Office of Personnel Management, however, they are intentionally vague to allow for an interpretation by specific agencies. For instance, hiring organizations might use their judgments to determine whether or not an applicant has “specific” expertise for a particular job.

These requirements serve as a basis for determining a student’s entry-level class. When you start working at your new job, you begin to accrue specific work experience that will aid you in your career. Applicants for all grade levels and positions that require educational and work experience are required to submit equivalent combinations of education and experience.

It is important to remember that certain jobs require additional qualifications, such as physical fitness, speed of typing or the age. These requirements aren’t common and only apply to specific professions that require a certain physical condition.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below outlines the work experience necessary to be able to fill Professional and Scientific Positions in different areas. Depending on credentials the positions are assigned grades ranging from GS-7 up to GS-13+. Computer science, engineering, biology, chemistry, and other technical fields are some examples of jobs that fall under this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

Based on qualifications, the grades for these positions vary from G-1 to GS-6+. Clerical work, stenographers along with administrative assistance are just a few examples of work that fall under this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Every December, thousands of federal employees eagerly await the announcement of whether or not they’ll be able to get a pay raise in the next year. But who gets to determine the amount of increase you’ll be getting? Is it true that the president made the idea up? What about locality adjustments – who is responsible for determining them?

A major revision of the General Schedule Pay Scale was caused by the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) of 1990, which was enacted by Congress. The bill specifically sought to reduce the growing wage disparity between federal and private sector posts to make sure that highly skilled individuals are prevented from leaving their government positions.

The most significant change was the launch of the Locality Adjustments, which boost Base Pay by a certain amount in accordance with the employee’s location of employment. It is notable that the law connects locations adjustment rates to similar private sector earnings rather than the more well-known swings in living costs.

There are a variety of restrictions that govern the activities that government employees are allowed to do and are not permitted to do.

A number of aspects, such as Grading criteria and policy are regulated in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Some of these rules are codified, while OPM establishes others as the necessity arises. For example, suppose the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are severely hindered. In this scenario it is possible that there is a possibility that Office of Personnel Management (OPM) might even decide to set the higher rates of base salary, referred to as Specialty Pay Rates, for certain classes, levels, areas and jobs.
