Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are developed through The Office of Personnel Management, though they are deliberately loose to permit an interpretation by specific agencies. For instance, hiring companies may make their judgment on whether candidates have “specific” expertise for a given position.

These requirements serve as a basis for determining the class that a student will attend. From the moment you begin working at a new job you start to gain specific work experiences that will aid you in your career. Applicants for all grade levels and positions with education and experience are encouraged to present a comparable combination of education and work experience.

Remember that some jobs have additional criteria such as typing speed, health or the age. These criteria are uncommon and only apply to certain professions that require a certain level of physical fitness.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below provides the quantity of work experience necessary for Scientific and Professional Positions in different areas. Depending on credentials they are given grades ranging from GS-7 to GS-13+. Computer science, engineering biology, chemistry as well as other technical jobs are examples of jobs that fit this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

In terms of qualifications, the grades for these jobs differ between GS-1 and GS-6+. Clerical jobs, stenographers as well as administrative assistants are just a few types of jobs in this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Every December, thousands of federal employees eagerly await the announcement of the decision on whether or not they’ll receive a raise in the next year. But who decides how much pay increase you’ll get? Is it true that the president whipped it up? And what about locality adjustments – who is responsible for the process of determining the amount?

A major revision of the General Schedule Pay Scale was created by legislation known as the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) in 1990, passed by Congress. Specifically, the bill attempted to tackle the increasing pay gap between federal and private sector positions to keep highly skilled employees from leaving their jobs in the government.

The most significant change was the launch of the Locality Adjustments that increase the base Pay by a specific percentage dependent on the team member’s employment location. It is notable that the law ties the rates of adjustment for location to comparable private sector incomes, rather than the more widely recognized fluctuations in living costs.

Certain restrictions regulate the work of government employees and are not allowed to do.

A variety of elements, including the grading guidelines and policies, are overseen through The Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Certain details are codified, whereas OPM sets others up when the requirement arises. As an example, suppose that the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are severely hindered. In that situation there is a possibility that OPM Office of Personnel Management (OPM) might decide to establish more favourable base rates, also known as Specialty Pay Rates, for specific grade, levels, locations and even professions.
