Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are formulated by the Office of Personnel Management, however, they are intentionally broad to allow interpretation by particular agencies. For example, hiring agencies may make their judgment to determine whether or not an applicant has “specific” expertise for a particular job.

These requirements are used to determine the student’s entry-level classes. When you first begin working for a new employer, you begin to accrue specific work experience that will allow you to advance your career. For all levels of applicants and positions with both experiences and education are encouraged to submit a combination of education and experience.

Please remember that certain positions require additional qualifications, such as typing speed, health, or the age. These requirements aren’t common and are only applicable to certain vocations that need a high physical fitness.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below details the required working experience needed for Scientific and Professional Positions in various areas. Depending on credentials, these positions are assigned grades ranging from GS-7 up to GS-13+. Computer science, engineering, biology, chemistry, and other technical fields are some examples of jobs that fall under this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

In terms of qualifications, the grades for these positions differ from the GS-1 level to the GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, and administrative support are just a few instances of jobs that fall under this category.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Each December, thousands federal workers are waiting with anticipation for the news on whether or not they will get a pay boost for the coming year. But who gets to determine the amount of raise you’ll get? Does it really matter that the president whipped the idea up? And what is the situation with locality adjustments — who is responsible for making them?

A major revision of the General Schedule Pay Scale was caused by The Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) of 1990, which was passed by Congress. The bill specifically sought to address the widening pay gap between federal and private sector positions in order to keep highly skilled employees from leaving their jobs in the government.

The most significant change was inclusion of Locality Adjustments which raise the base Pay by a percentage depending on a team member’s place of employment. It is notable that the law ties location adjustment rates to similar private-sector incomes rather than to the more well-recognized swings in living costs.

Certain restrictions regulate the work of government employees and aren’t allowed to do.

Many aspects, like grade criteria and policy are controlled in The Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Some of these details are codified, while OPM sets others up when the requirement arises. For instance, suppose that the government’s retention and recruitment efforts are severely affected. In that case, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) might decide to establish greater base wages, referred to as Specialty Pay Rates for certain grades, levels, places and even professions.
