Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are created by the Office of Personnel Management, although they are purposefully vague to allow for interpretation by particular agencies. For instance, hiring organizations could use their judgment on whether the candidate has “specific” expertise for a given position.

These requirements are used to determine a student’s entry-level class. From the moment you begin working in a new position you start to gain specific work experiences that will help you advance in your career. For all levels of applicants and positions with both education and experience are encouraged to present a comparable combination of educational and professional experience.

Be aware that some positions include additional requirements such as typing speed, health or the age. These standards are not very common and only pertain to specific vocations that need a high physical condition.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below describes the required working experience needed to be able to fill Professional and Scientific Positions in different areas. Based on qualifications, these positions are assigned grades ranging from GS-7 up to 13+. Engineering, computer science, biology, chemistry, and many other technical positions are some of the jobs that are in this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

By qualifications, the Grades for these positions vary from G-1 to GS-6+. Clerical jobs, stenographers and administrative support are all instances of jobs that fall under this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Every December, thousands federal employees are eagerly awaiting the announcement on what they’ll receive a raise for the coming year. But who decides how much of a pay increase you’ll get? Do you believe that the president made the decision? And what is the situation with locality adjustments — who is in charge of making these?

A major revision of the General Schedule Pay Scale was caused by The Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) of 1990, which was enacted by Congress. Specifically, the bill attempted to tackle the increasing wage gap between federal positions and private sector posts to make sure that highly skilled individuals are prevented from leaving their government positions.

The most significant change was the implementation of locality Adjustments which raise the Base Pay by a certain percentage according to a employee’s location of employment. It is notable that the law links the rates of adjustment for location to comparable private sector incomes, rather than the more well-known fluctuations in the cost of living.

Several restrictions govern the work of government employees and cannot do.

Many elements, such as Grading criteria and policy are regulated under the supervision of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Some of these rules are codified, whereas OPM develops additional rules as the demand arises. For instance, suppose that the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are considerably hampered. In that situation it’s possible that there is a possibility that Office of Personnel Management (OPM) might even decide to set greater base wages, referred to as Specialty Pay Rates, for certain grades, levels, places and occupations.
