Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are formulated through The Office of Personnel Management, though they are deliberately unclear to permit an interpretation by specific agencies. For instance, hiring agencies may make their judgment on whether a candidate has “specific” expertise for a particular job.

These requirements are used to determine the class that a student will attend. From the moment you begin working at your new job you start to gain specific experience in your work that will assist you in advancing your career. Applicants for all grade levels and jobs that require both education and experience are encouraged to submit equivalent combinations of experience and education.

It is important to remember that certain jobs include additional requirements such as the speed of typing, health, or age. These criteria are uncommon and only pertain to specific professions that require a certain physical fitness.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below outlines the quantity of experience required for Scientific and Professional Positions in different areas. Based on the credentials of applicants that are required, these positions are awarded grades that range from GS-7 through GS-13+. Engineering, computer science biology, chemistry as well as other technical jobs are some examples of jobs that fit this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

According to qualifications, the grades for these jobs differ between GS-1 and GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, and administrative support are just a few types of jobs in this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Each December, thousands federal employees eagerly await the announcement on the decision on whether or not they’ll receive a raise in the next year. But who determines what amount of a pay increase you’ll get? Do you believe that the president whipped the decision? And what about locality adjustment – who is responsible for the creation of these?

A significant revision to the General Schedule Pay Scale was brought about by legislation known as the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) in 1990, passed by Congress. The bill specifically sought to eliminate the increasing pay gap between federal and private sector jobs to stop highly skilled workers from being forced to quit their government jobs.

The most important change was the introduction of Locality Adjustments which increase the Base Pay by a specific percentage dependent on the team member’s employment location. It is noteworthy that the law ties location adjustment rates to similar private sector incomes, rather than the more well-known fluctuations in the cost of living.

Certain restrictions regulate what government workers are allowed and cannot do.

Many elements, such as grading criteria and policy, are overseen by The Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Certain of these aspects are codified, whereas OPM sets others up when the requirement arises. For example, suppose the government’s retention and recruitment efforts are severely affected. In that case there is a possibility that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) may even establish the higher rates of base salary, known as Specialty Pay Rates, for specific classes, levels, areas and jobs.
