The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has set these criteria for education (OPM). There are five major professional groupings, each with their own set of academic specifications:

Essential Points to Keep in Mind

The guidelines were developed by The Office of Personnel Management, however, they are intentionally unclear to permit an interpretation by specific agencies. For instance, hiring companies could use their judgment on whether candidates have “specific” expertise for a given position.

These requirements will determine the student’s entry-level classes. From the moment you begin working in a new position, you begin to accrue specific work experience that will help you advance in your career. Applicants for all grade levels and jobs that require both experiences and education are encouraged to present a comparable combination of education and experience.

Remember that some jobs include additional requirements such as physical fitness, speed of typing or age. These requirements aren’t common and are only applicable to certain professions that require a certain level of physical condition.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below details the working experience needed for Professional and Scientific Positions in different fields. Based on qualifications they are given grades ranging from GS-7 to GS-13+. Computer science, engineering biology, chemistry, and other technical fields are just a few examples of jobs that fit this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

By qualifications, the Grades for these jobs differ between the GS-1 level to the GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, as well as administrative assistants are all examples of jobs under this category.

Some of these details are codified, while OPM creates other elements as the demand arises. As an example, suppose that the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are severely affected.
