Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are created through the Office of Personnel Management, though they are deliberately unclear to permit an interpretation by specific agencies. For instance, hiring companies can use their judgement on whether the candidate has “specific” expertise for a given position.

These prerequisites will determine the class that a student will attend. As soon as you start working in a new position, you begin to accrue specific experience in your work that will allow you to advance your career. For all levels of applicants and positions that require educational and work experience are required to provide a similar combination of education and work experience.

Remember that some jobs include additional requirements such as physical fitness, speed of typing or age. These requirements aren’t common and only apply to specific vocations that need a high physical fitness.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below details the experience required for Professional and Scientific Positions in different fields. Depending on credentials that are required, these positions are awarded grades ranging from GS-7 up to 13+. Engineering, computer science and biology, chemistry as well as other technical jobs are some examples of jobs that are in this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

In terms of qualifications, the grades for these jobs vary between G-1 to GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, as well as administrative assistants are just a few examples of jobs under this category.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Each December, thousands federal employees are eagerly awaiting the announcement of whether or not they’ll get a pay boost in the next year. Who decides the amount of pay increase you’ll get? Do you believe that the president made up the concept? And what about locality adjustments – who is responsible for making them?

A significant overhaul of the General Schedule Pay Scale was resulted from legislation known as the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) of 1990, passed by Congress. Specifically, the bill attempted to eliminate the increasing wage disparity between federal and private sector positions to make sure that highly skilled individuals are prevented from quitting their government jobs.

The most significant change was the introduction of Locality Adjustments which increase the Base Pay by a certain amount according to a team member’s place of employment. It is noteworthy that the law ties adjustments for location to similar private sector earnings, not to the more well-known swings in living costs.

Certain restrictions regulate what government employees are permitted to do and aren’t allowed to do.

Many aspects, like the grading guidelines and policies, are regulated by an agency called the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Some of these rules are codified, while OPM establishes others as the need arises. For instance, suppose that the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are considerably hampered. In this case it’s possible that OPM Office of Personnel Management (OPM) could even set higher base pay rates, referred to as Specialty Pay Rates for certain grade, levels, locations and jobs.
