Essential Points to Keep in Mind

The guidelines were developed through the Office of Personnel Management, however, they are intentionally unclear to permit an interpretation by specific agencies. For instance, hiring organizations could use their judgment in determining whether the candidate has “specific” expertise for a specific job.

These requirements will determine the student’s entry-level classes. As soon as you start working at a new job you start to gain specific experience in your work that will aid you in your career. For all levels of applicants and positions with both educational and work experience are required to submit equivalent combinations of educational and professional experience.

Be aware that some positions require additional qualifications, such as typing speed, health, or age. These standards are not very common and only apply to specific professions that require a certain level of physical condition.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below describes the experience needed for Scientific and Professional Positions in different fields. According to the qualifications, these positions are assigned grades ranging from GS-7 up to 13+. Engineering, computer science, biology, chemistry, and other technical roles are examples of jobs that fall under this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

By qualifications, the Grades for these jobs vary between GS-1 and GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, as well as administrative assistants are just a few instances of jobs that fall under this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Every December, thousands of federal workers are waiting with anticipation for the announcement of whether or not they’ll receive a salary boost for the coming year. Who decides the amount of increase you’ll receive? Are you sure that the president made it up? And what about locality adjustment — who is responsible for making these?

A significant revision to the General Schedule Pay Scale was caused by the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) in 1990, passed by Congress. Specifically, the bill attempted to eliminate the increasing wage gap between federal and private sector posts to prevent highly skilled people from quitting their government jobs.

The most significant change was inclusion of Locality Adjustments that increase the base Pay by a certain amount according to a team member’s employment location. It is important to note that the law links locations adjustment rates to similar private sector earnings rather than the more well-known swings in living costs.

Several restrictions govern the work of government employees and are not allowed to do.

Many elements, such as the grading guidelines and policies, are controlled under the supervision of an agency called the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Some of these rules are codified, whereas OPM creates other elements as the demand arises. For instance, suppose that the government’s retention and recruitment efforts are severely hampered. In that situation it is possible that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) could even set the higher rates of base salary known as Specialty Pay Rates for certain grades, levels, locations and jobs.
