Essential Points to Keep in Mind

These guidelines are created in collaboration with the Office of Personnel Management, however, they are intentionally vague to allow for the interpretation of specific agencies. For instance, hiring organizations might use their judgments on whether an applicant has “specific” expertise for a particular job.

These prerequisites serve as a basis for determining a student’s entry-level class. From the moment you begin working at a new job, you begin to accrue specific work experience that will aid you in your career. Applicants for all grade levels and positions that require education and experience are encouraged to submit a combination of education and work experience.

Please remember that certain positions include additional requirements such as typing speed, health or the age. These standards are not very common and only pertain to specific vocations that need a high level of physical fitness.

Position Requirements in the Professional and Scientific Fields

The table below describes the experience needed to be able to fill Professional and Scientific Positions in different areas. Based on the credentials of applicants the positions are assigned grades that range from GS-7 to 13+. Engineering, computer science, biology, chemistry, and other technical roles are just a few examples of jobs that fit this category.

Positions Requirements in the Clerical and Administrative Support

In terms of qualifications, the grades for these jobs vary between GS-1 to GS-6+. Clerical occupations, stenographers, and administrative support are all types of jobs in this classification.

Who Makes The Decisions On The General Schedule Pay Rates?

Every December, thousands of federal workers excitedly await the news on the decision on whether or not they’ll receive a salary boost for the coming year. But who gets to determine the amount of pay increase you’ll get? Does it really matter that the president whipped it up? What about locality adjustments — who is responsible for the creation of them?

A significant overhaul of the General Schedule Pay Scale was created by the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) in 1990, which was enacted by Congress. The bill specifically sought to tackle the increasing wage gap between federal and private sector positions in order to prevent highly skilled people from leaving their government positions.

The most significant change was implementation of locality Adjustments which raise Base Pay by a certain percentage depending on a employee’s work location. It is notable that the law links locations adjustment rates to similar private-sector incomes rather than to the more well-recognized swings in the cost of living.

There are a variety of restrictions that govern what government employees are permitted to do and are not permitted to do.

Many aspects, like grading criteria and policy, are controlled in OPM. Many elements, such as grading criteria and policy are governed by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Some of these rules are codified while OPM establishes others as the requirement arises. For instance, suppose that the government’s recruitment and retention efforts are severely hindered. In this case it is possible that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) might even decide to set the higher rates of base salary, referred to as Specialty Pay Rates for certain grade, levels, locations and jobs.
